Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

OCD is an anxiety disorder whereby a person entertains recurrent and intrusive thoughts, ideas or feelings and then feels compelled to carry out some repetitive and ritualistic behaviour to get a sense of relief. These behaviours are often such things as hand washing, checking and rechecking, putting things into a certain order.

This can be extremely time consuming and distressing for the individuals concerned, who often manage to keep it secret even from close acquaintances.

Recent research supported by brain scans shows that three areas of the brain are involved, and in the case of OCD an unhelpful loop is created and maintained.  This is sometimes referred to as brain lock.  In a person not suffering from OCD, this loop serves a purpose, which once achieved, automatically turns off.

How hypnotherapy and micro-electrotherapy can help

Hypnotherapy provides support to a successful four stage treatment for this condition.

  • Stages one and two are to reframe the thinking around the OCD symptoms, enabling these to be seen as part of a treatable process.
  • Stages three and four enable a more positive focus and putting into perspective the previous anxiety-making thoughts, so that they become devalued.

Micro-electrotherapy as applied using the Alpha-Stim, has the effect of calming the anxiety associated with intrusive thoughts and makes it easier for the patient to move onto stages three and four.
